How the technology works
Strip away the branding and every AI girlfriend app is the same three-layer sandwich:
- A language model. The engine is a large language model (LLM): software trained on enormous amounts of text until it can generate fluent, contextual replies. On its own, an LLM has no personality at all.
- A persona. The app wraps the model in a character sheet: a name, a backstory, a way of speaking, likes and dislikes. Every reply is generated "in character." This is why the same underlying technology can be a shy bookworm in one app and a flirtatious gym rat in another.

What they can, and can't, do
What they're genuinely good at: available conversation at any hour, in-character consistency, playful or romantic roleplay, remembering details, and (on the full-featured platforms) voice and pictures that match the character. For many adults it's simply an entertaining, low-stakes way to talk.
What they are not: a person. The warmth is generated, the character doesn't exist when the tab is closed, and no reputable platform claims otherwise. They're also not therapists. If an app is marketed as mental-health care, hold it to a much higher standard than an entertainment product.
